How To Write An Awesome Blog Post in 6 Steps!
Anyone can have a blog or write a blog post. The trick is knowing how to write a blog post by incorporating those crucial steps that will take your blog post to the next level. Although incorporating these 6 steps in my writing process have increased the time it takes me to complete a post, it has also helped me attract more readers and generate higher traffic. COMING UP WITH AN IDEA
The first step is coming up with a great blog post idea. This will, of course, depend on your audience and niche. Coming up with different blog post ideas on a regular basis can definitely be a struggle at times. Personally, I like to set a day, different from the one on which I will be writing the blog post where I sit down and just brainstorm blog post ideas. It takes me a while but I end up with some great ideas that I simply jot down in my notes. This prevents me from wasting time when I sit down to write the actual post. I like to use the WordPress reader section and Pinterest to get my ideas flowing if I am feeling stuck. Here are two great articles that have really helped me when I am all out of ideas!
RESEARCH YOUR TOPIC
This is something I have only recently started doing and noticed the biggest difference in the quality of my blog posts. Researching your topic will ensure that you are not missing out on any key information. Plus, it is always a good idea to learn more about the topic through what professionals have to say. Your audience will also really appreciate this as they will know you are providing them with valuable content. One thing to keep in mind though is to not waste too much time researching. I am definitely guilty of reading like 7-8 articles just to make sure I have all the information I need. That is not necessary at all- just reading 2-3 articles is more than enough!
MAKING AN OUTLINE
So, you have a killer blog post idea and have done all your research. Now, it is time to organize all your information by making an outline. This simply means creating a structure and writing down all the important points you want to cover in your post. This will include the heading (title), introduction, subheadings (for example my subheadings in this post are ‘coming up with an idea’, ‘making an outline’, etc.), conclusion. Oh, pro tip- do not forget to use the HTML heading 2 tags for your subheadings. It helps with on page SEO. Making an outline will not only save you time while writing the blog post but it will also ensure that you are not getting off track or writing useless information that has nothing to do with your blog post.
WRITE THE POST
Oh look, we are finally at that step where we actually get to write the post. Some people like to sit down and write whatever comes into their head. They then revisit the post to make changes. I personally have always been more of a gradual writer- basically, i fix things as i go. Do whatever works well for you. It is very easy to become distracted and start procrastinating at this stage of the process. I would highly recommend keeping your phone or anything else that is likely to distract you away from you. You could also set yourself a timer if that helps. Another thing a lot of people including myself struggle with is coming up with an introduction. I can literally sit there for hours trying to come up with the perfect introduction only to realize I barely have time left to actually write the post. If you struggle with this, leave the introduction for the end.
At this point, you are probably itching to get that blog post published. We just need to make a few more changes before that can happen. Make sure to read over your blog post at least 2-3 times to check for any grammar/spelling mistakes. This is also when you can go ahead and add/remove any information you want and add any appropriate links and images. MAKE YOUR POST SEO FRIENDLY
Okay, we are almost there. Just make sure your post is SEO friendly. The easiest way to do this is to use the plugin Yoast. Yoast will help improve your blog post readability and also remind you to add internal links and let you know if you have used your keywords in the right places and enough times. You can also edit the way your post title looks on a search engine which I find is such a cool feature. You definitely do not want all that hard work you did to go to waste. By optimizing your post for SEO, you can ensure your post is likely to rank higher on Google and hence gain higher traffic.
These might seem like a lot of steps but once you get the hang of it, it honestly becomes second nature and barely takes any time. Remember, quality over quantity because at the end of the day that is what will get your readers coming back for more content!
